Thirty years after its publication "The partisan Johnny" Beppe Fenoglio in 2000 became a movie directed by Guido Chiesa, who signed with Antonio Leotti I also wrote the screenplay. For the first time a novel by Piedmont veniva trasportato sullo schermo; in precedenza c’erano state solo due riduzioni per la televisione: “La paga del sabato” di Sandro Bolchi e “Una questione privata” di Alberto Negrin. We know how the resistance is an issue capable of provoking debate tainted by ideologies and schematics, but finally we managed to give the right emphasis to a work, which gives an image of the partisan war and anti-rhetorical decidedly disenchanted. In this sense, we can now say that the film is shown qualitatively Church above the evidence that in those years, Italian cinema had given to this issue, because the story is told, despite its size almost autobiographical, it becomes
emblematic of a historical moment and civil decisive for more than a generation, and because the personal adventure of the protagonist does not prevent us from ever widening look to the environment, people in the world that surrounds him and that this war was involving in a state of extreme suffering. How much of this is credited with Fenoglio, and how the writers' stated interest there would be a barren exercise in rhetoric, given the respect that the film shows against the literary work. The unconventional style of the novel and its size almost autobiographical did not prevent to make a transposition that turns out to be convincing: "At some awe was inevitable, but the fact
that" Johnny the Partisan "is actually an unfinished novel, born dall'arbitraria union of two different drafts and published by Einaudi after the author's death, helped the writer Anthony Leotta and me to consider it not a closed text and unchangeable, but a narrative track on which to work freely. The process of writing has proved to be very simple and even the narrative structure, once jagged, it is shown immediately clear. "On the opening credits run images of vintage newsreels, accompanied by contemporary radio messages, but the vision is that the 'Listening is abruptly interrupted: the official documents are reduced to fragments, to make room for another kind of testimony, much less as the official position of humanity. Maybe a little' pride and honor certainly the writer, the film begins and ends, explaining the desire to remain faithful to the novel. The opening phrase "Johnny was watching from the window of his town house hill" becomes a close-up of the main character peeking from behind a shutter the arrival of his father (now shown in subjects between the rows of the hill), the closing "Two months after the war was over," even a caption.
That Johnny is inevitably a constant presence throughout the film, the gaze of the viewer identifies with her, even when the views do not coincide, ie when there are subjective shots. The result is an increase of tension in the viewer, who can not, however, to assume a higher consciousness than that of the character. In one sequence an absence of Johhny and his eyes: one in which a column of resisting captured by the Germans, escapes a boy who is killed by a volley of gunfire. Then to discover that it is a classmate of the protagonist. In the novel, in which the narrator's point of view coincides with that of the protagonist, this episode could not be there. The director spoke of this sequence as a betrayal of a small, necessary to explain the condition they were in the same age as Johnny and they are required una scelta.
Poche frasi, ma significative, sopra tutte le altre "I'm in the wrong sector of the right side". Il protagonista si sente sempre più distante dal suo passato: il libro che stava traducendo è become a set of sheets crumpled and his decision not to allow a return. The camera lingers on faces and landscapes, or shake, carried on shoulders, in the battle sequences, reminding us that "Being a partisan was all here: sit, mostly on clay or stone, smoking (to have), then or see a fascist, without getting behind the brush, and move to kill or be killed, to inflict or receive a tomb mezzostimata, mezzoamata.
remains to say that the film at its release was strongly affected by an absurd distribution, which made it difficult to view. We do not know why this happened and why good Italian films must often undergo this treatment, but perhaps some Guido Chiesa had suspected: "But now I know that the greatest dangers for Italian films will live after the shooting, at the time of removal. It seems to me that there are no rules, that the success or failure of a film is determined the luck of the moment. So I think essential to find a distribution motivated, willing to defend the film, enabling the completion of that indispensable word to launch the most challenging cultural and entertainment products.
